WHAT IS SPAM

In the context of electronic messaging, spam refers to unsolicited, bulk or indiscriminate messages, typically sent for a commercial purpose to a large number of recipients.

Also Spam text messages are unsolicited and generally unwanted commercial advertisements sent to wireless phones via text or picture/video messaging.

FORMS OF SPAMMING

  1. Spam Messages

    Sending a broadcast message to a database of numbers which are not actively subscribed to the service in a bid to either subscribe such numbers to the service or promote the service.
  2. Unsolicited Messages: 

    Sending any message to subscribers from any database; either as individuals or a group if they have not actively subscribed to or have not requested for the service.
  3. Wrongful subscriptions of Customers 

    Wrongfully subscribing customers to your service without their consent. This is either on sms subscription and includes customers who have opted out of the service.
  4. Messaging Unsubscribed

    Sending a broadcast message to numbers of subscribers who have stopped or unsubscribed from the service to promote the service. 

 

ENFORCEMENT

Advanta Africa Limited has partnered with Safaricom in the provision of Premium Rate Services. Safaricom in a measure to protect the right to privacy of all its customers has set in place measures to protect mobile phone users from spamming. Advanta Africa Limited adheres to these set stands and closely monitors the activities of all its clients and partners to ensure they also adhere to anti-spaming rules.

 

MEASURES TO PREVENT SPAMING

  1. Opt In Messages

Mobile Phone user will be prompted twice to confirm that they want to subscribe to a service before they are enrolled to that service.

  1. Welcome Message

Upon Opt In to a service a subscriber will receive a message with the following information to ensure that are aware

  • The name service subscribed to
  • The cost of the service
  • Frequency of the service
  • Help-line customer care number
  • Summary of the most critical terms and conditions  
  1. Unsubscription Method

Subscribers will also be provided with a means of unsubscribing from the service.
